A major multi-stakeholder coalition has been created in India and is called The Coalition for Responsible Evolution of AI (CoRE-AI). This coalition has brought together 30 key stakeholders in the tech space to foster innovation among Indian AI startups.
The CoRE-AI coalition aims to ensure that the government understands the industry, academia, and startup approaches to regulating AI. Held within the Dialogue Think Tank in New Delhi, the coalition saw a confluence of key stakeholders, such as tech behemoths like Google, Microsoft, and AWS, IT giants like Infosys, academic institutions like Ashoka University and IIM Bengaluru, and leading AI startups like BharatGPT-creator CoRover.ai and AI music startup Beatoven.ai.
Notably, the coalition aims to generate public trust in AI through voluntary industry guidelines and standards for the technology. Additionally, it will also preach robust AI regulatory frameworks, and public-private partnerships, addressing bias and fairness in AI algorithms, transparency in AI operations, and upholding user privacy and data protection.
Mr. S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), is confident that the CoRE-AI forum will contribute to the larger national goal of giving India a global leadership role. Also, the coalition said in a statement that it will focus on exploring a “principles-based approach" and leverage risk assessments to provide flexibility in addressing diverse AI challenges.
It will also develop guidelines and contribute to a “robust governance framework” to help create a trustworthy and innovative AI ecosystem in India. Furthermore, the coalition will direct its focus on understanding the impact of market forces on AI adoption and provide clear direction regarding demand and governance frameworks “to boost confidence and innovation among startups.”
The forum’s key working sectors to execute the responsible AI agenda are:
1. Human-centered AI
2. AI and Innovation
3. AI Governance
4. DPI and AI
