Microsoft announced an investment of $1.7 billion to expand cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in Indonesia. This investment is the largest Microsoft has made in its 29-year presence in Indonesia and will span the next four years.

The initiative is set to support the Indonesian government's Golden Indonesia 2045 Vision which aims to transform the country into a global economic powerhouse.

Key highlights of the partnership

Microsoft's investment focuses on several key areas such as establishing new cloud and AI infrastructure, offering AI training for 840,000 Indonesians, and bolstering the local developer community. This strategic expansion aligns with Indonesia's goals to enhance its digital capabilities and become a leader in the digital economy.

According to Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO of Microsoft, these initiatives will include upgrades in digital infrastructure, extensive skilling programs, and ongoing support for developers, all of which are designed to help Indonesia capitalize on the extensive economic and productivity opportunities offered by advanced AI technologies.

Supporting Nadella's vision, Budi Arie Setiadi, Indonesia's Minister of Communications and Information Technology, says, “Indonesia’s collaboration with Microsoft on AI perfectly aligns with our ambition for a future driven by digital innovation. I am confident this partnership will open up new horizons for Indonesia, positioning us not only as consumers of technology but as pivotal contributors to the global technological supply chain.”

The investment also supports Microsoft's broader commitment to equip 2.5 million individuals across the ASEAN region with AI skills by 2025. This training aims to enhance technical and vocational education, boost women's careers in cybersecurity, and improve AI fluency among youth from underserved communities.

Moreover, Microsoft promises to assist 10,000 Indonesian developers to become AI experts through the AI Odyssey program and other educational initiatives.
