Media conglomerate News Corp. has signed a deal with OpenAI to share its news content with the ChatGPT creator. OpenAI will leverage the media giant’s content in response to user queries and enhance its AI products.

Under this agreement, OpenAI will have access to both current and archived content from News Corp’s major news outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, MarketWatch, Investor’s Business Daily, FN, and New York Post; The Times, The Sunday Times, and The Sun; The Australian, news.com.au, The Daily Telegraph, The Courier Mail, The Advertiser, and Herald Sun; and others.

While the financial specifics were not disclosed, the Wall Street Journal reported that it could exceed US$ 250 million over five years. Additionally, the deal entails credits for News Corp.’s utilization of OpenAI technology.

Robert Thomson, the chief executive of News Corp., said, “We believe an historic agreement will set new standards for veracity, for virtue, and for value in the digital age.” He described OpenAI and its chief executive, Sam Altman, as “principled partners” who “understand the commercial and social significance of journalism.”

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, described the partnership as “a proud moment for journalism and technology.”

Further, News Corp. will extend the collaboration beyond content access by sharing its journalistic expertise with OpenAI to maintain the highest standards of journalism.

However, the deal also states that the content will not be readily available on ChatGPT immediately after publishing, to allow exclusivity to publishers for a while, as per the Wall Street Journal.
