David Sims, Staff Vice President for Security Technology Services at Elevance Health, speaks with Michael Wilcox, CISO-Field/VP, Office of the CISO at Stratascale, about innovation, the future of hospitals, a hybrid approach to healthcare innovation, the role of AI in businesses, and exploring responsible AI for business.

At the onset, Sims states that innovation can come from all areas of an organization and is not the responsibility of a few employees. He explains that innovation can come in many forms, such as identity access management in the information security sector, which has improved patient care.

In addition, Sims opines that innovation means a better way to do things. He emphasizes that teams should be encouraged to think differently and push boundaries to be successful. He maintains that he has been incorporating innovation within his team for a decade.

“Future hospitals will be driven by accessible knowledge.”

In continuation, he insists that the goal is to safeguard the business and the trust of customers. Innovation not only helps protect those customers but it also helps to maintain the vitality of the business, Sims asserts.

He envisions that future hospitals will be driven by knowledge that is accessible and available worldwide. As an example, Sims shares that when employees enter a hospital, they will be identified by various methods, such as an identity card. Within that identity card, there could be the methods that the employees need to access all the solutions that they are responsible for.

This would enable the users to access the solutions they need via some form of proximity on their phone or card and save time from tasks like logging in and resetting passwords. Moreover, Sims urges maintaining security and governance of information to ensure the right people can access it while keeping bad actors out.

Speaking of innovation in healthcare, he suggests it needs to be implemented in a hybrid approach to address all aspects of care, from patient experience to office experience and care delivery. Sims recommends utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI), the zero-trust model and other advanced authentication methods, a unified approach to using medical devices, the Internet of things, and other technologies.

To accomplish this, identity authentication must be secure, providing ubiquitous access through the organized utilization of available resources.

However, Sims highlights the need to find ways to deliver service while maintaining compliance. He notes that the only way to speed up the process of service delivery is through modernization and digital innovation. He asserts that digital transformation is the key to success and suggests convincing inside professionals and service providers of the organization to push for modernization and improvement of the systems.

Thereafter, Sims advises individuals to explore Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies and learn more about them. He advises businesses and organizations to be aware of contracts and acceptable policies when using free solutions like ChatGPT, Bing Chat, or Bard. He recommends businesses assess arrangements with service providers to maintain compliance when using AI for business solutions.

Elaborating on the topic of using AI, Sims suggests that businesses can now comply with AI. He states that most large corporations are already utilizing it, so it can no longer be seen as something new and unusual. However, organizations must maintain accuracy regarding what is fed into the system and what is extracted.

He maintains that these are business secrets, and organizations must be aware of what they are putting in at the front end and what's happening at the back end.

Delving further, Sims insists that everyone should look into responsible AI and form a responsible AI committee to examine how businesses are consuming artificial intelligence and machine learning and set governance around that.

In conclusion, Sims asserts that technology can be helpful but it is ultimately up to the people in the organization to carry out its will. Therefore, he states that the responsible AI committee formed including technical delivery personnel, the leadership, and other aspects of the organization must understand the implications of bringing artificial intelligence into the organization.
