(US and Canada) Fredrik Nilsson, Axis Communications VP of Americas, speaks with Gavroshe Chairman Derek Strauss in a video interview about data provenance in surveillance video, compliance challenges, cloud computing, and deep learning for security cameras.
Discussing ways to deal with data provenance in surveillance video, Nilsson says that the data can be used better for security and making operations smarter. He notes that today's cameras have deep learning capabilities and good analytics to make forensic video accessible and proactive for operations or security.
Nilsson points out two primary ways of dealing with the cost. One is the hybrid model, tagging and using data locally to access it remotely. The second involves the edge and generating metadata. With the latter, the amount of data to be sent to the cloud is much less, he explains.
Addressing the need for more resources and expertise to support the technologies, Nilsson says that the security departments know how to run secure operations. Similarly, the IT departments know how to run an efficient and cyber-secure IT network. He adds that there are many instances where both departments work together to be more effective.
Next, Nilsson describes compliance and regulations as hurdles when introducing technologies. He notes that compliance and privacy are crucial but can limit innovation. He cites, as an example, European privacy laws that allow cameras to record vehicle details, which pose a challenge for training deep learning algorithms.
In conclusion, Nilsson emphasizes that if surveillance cameras are not managed in a cyber-secure way, they can become entry points into companies’ other systems.
