(US and Canada) Danielle Crop, CDO, Albertsons Companies, speaks with Kellie de Leon, Senior Director of Content Marketing, Treasure Data, in a video interview about the challenges of gathering and governing the use of customer data, and the CDO’s role in defining the technology roadmap.

Crop cites a couple of key data challenges — understanding the various customer personas within the organization and organizing data accordingly at the different levels of hierarchy. She also reveals that building a customer 360 for Albertsons will help manage and govern customer data and make it available as a service to all the other organizations within the company.

When asked how she prioritizes getting value from customer data for stakeholders, Crop explains that she encourages her team to conduct stakeholder interviews, gather feedback, understand opportunities and then evaluate them using an ROI-based approach. She also mentions that she likes using data to prioritize data.

Regarding the role of data and analytics in innovation, Crop says it is difficult to innovate without data. She adds that AI-ML capabilities will be the center of innovation. Crop also stresses the need for data management, governance, products, and data science in one organization. Governed data is crucial for innovation, she notes.

Next, Crop discusses technology’s role in helping influence the value drivers for the business. She explains that it is almost impossible to know it all with the large scale of data. She maintains, however, that it is impossible to manage, govern, or innovate appropriately without knowing all the data, and AI and ML can help with that.

According to Crop, the CDO’s role in creating the technology roadmap is to work with the business and its stakeholders to define priorities, translate them, and collaborate with technology partners to deliver on future needs. In other words, it’s about translating business needs and turning them into technical realities.
