(US and Canada) Daren Hubbard, VP Information Technology and Chief Information Officer of Georgia Institute of Technology, speaks with Katrina Adkins, Director of Education Solutions at SHI, in a video interview about his professional journey, ongoing initiatives at the institute, and improving the student experience.
Hubbard has been a higher-ed IT professional for over two decades. When it comes to posting on social media about the organization's initiatives, he says he does so to raise awareness about the campus's initiatives and demonstrate how the teams deal with challenges.
As he sheds light on a key initiative his team is working on, he points to the institute's data excellence program, which is part of campus-wide initiatives surrounding data governance, privacy, security, and risk. It aims to enable people on campus to interact, use, and leverage the data. It also includes identity and access management and keeping up to date with the tools leveraged to maintain the data infrastructure.
Continuing, Hubbard emphasizes the institute's focus on customer engagement and the goal to create an environment where people can participate and be aware of all the activities happening on campus.
He explains that the team working on these initiatives includes faculty members, researchers, and students. The team follows the concept of data democracy, which is about creating an inclusive environment for the various community stakeholders to extract value and participate.
When asked how his work impacts the students on campus, Hubbard says that the higher education institution primarily focuses on learning outcomes, creating knowledge, and the teaching, learning, and research ecosystem. The student experience is at the core of this project.
In conclusion, Hubbard notes that much relies on the technology infrastructure students use daily.
