VIDEO | University of Toronto Data Science Director: People Who Truly Understand Data Are Really Important
Published on

(US and Canada) Pascal Tyrrell, Director of Data Science, University of Toronto, speaks with Robert Lutton, Vice President, Sandhill Consultants, and Editorial Board Chair CDO Magazine, in a video interview about leveraging tools for data analytics and addressing the shortage of data analytics talent.

Sharing suggestions for organizations planning to leverage data analytics, Tyrrell says organizations need to embrace tools that can search through data and find errors. He urges organizations to make it a part of their processes because data changes constantly, and the little changes over time slowly erode accuracy or performance.

To solve the data analytics talent shortage, Tyrrell advises collaboration. He says success in data analytics requires collaborative people with different expertise. He points out that data science has three pillars: math/statistics, computer science/engineering, and content experts who understand the business and the data. Tyrrell says a collaborative team can avoid bias in data by taking an interest in all three.

Furthermore, he maintains that people who truly understand data from a content perspective are really important but difficult to find.

Next, Tyrrell shares his experience mentoring and teaching students at the University of Toronto and in his business. He notes that he not only trains them in data science but teaches them how to understand data outcomes and impact.

In conclusion, Tyrrell says that most Canadian institutions are developing data science programs, and he urges students to enroll.

CDO Magazine appreciates Pascal Tyrrell for sharing his insights and data success stories with our global community.
