(US and Canada) Nicolas Chaillan, Prevent Breach Chief Technology Officer, speaks with Michael C. Fillios, IT Ally Founder and CEO, in a video interview about managing data governance, building momentum with leadership, and career advice for young professionals.
Chaillan highlights several focus areas for managing data governance across large organizations:
Learn and don't make the same mistakes twice.
Refrain from overreacting and creating policies that can affect innovation.
Bring flexibility and enable integration through federation and aggregation so people can access the correct data.
Employ search and AI/ML tools that help find data instead of renaming or restructuring the data.
Empower the data owner with the proper training to label data efficiently.
Have key data types like PII/PHI but don't go so precise that it becomes a bottleneck.
Focus on real impacts like time saved and security gain to show investment potential to the leadership.
Sharing advice for students looking forward to a career in data science, Chaillan says they need to “learn to learn” and reinvent themselves. He urges young professionals to spend about an hour a day learning. He adds that staying too long with the same organization can make one complacent.
Chaillan emphasizes that learning doesn’t always mean a degree. Professionals can use online means to learn and diversify skills.
Sharing his approach to dealing with the Great Resignation, he says that on the employee side, professionals should look at employment as a partnership with the company.
On the employer side, Chaillan says, organizations can address the clearance process and onboarding time and highlight the mission of ensuring safety.
