VIDEO | Republic Services Director of Enterprise Data: Data Observability Is Not Passive
Published on

(US and Canada) Sreeram Potukuchi, Director of Enterprise Data at Republic Services, speaks with Eleanor Treharne-Jones, Kensu CEO, in a video interview about data observability and the critical success criteria for implementing a data observability strategy.

Potukuchi sees observability as a command center view of the corporate enterprise information factory, as the information moves through systems, from collection to consumption. He explains that it is a command center because it is not passive and requires the ability to trace and resolve issues proactively.

Potukuchi highlights the most crucial pain points data observability addresses, including:

  • It provides proximity to the source of the problem.
  • It makes it possible to fix symptoms before they become issues.

When asked about the critical success criteria for implementing a data observability strategy in 2023, Potukuchi suggests:

  • Tracing the lineage.
  • The ability to see the data as it goes through the information factory while having the checks and balances in place.
  • Creating a template that can be replicated for all the other data pipelines and using the learning.

According to Potukuchi, data product owners must partner with the technical side to achieve observability. The technical side relies on product owners from functional business areas when there are conflicts in business information, and both sides work together to resolve the conflict based on a co-creation model.
