(US and Canada) Dorothy Aronson, CIO of the National Science Foundation, speaks with Denise Verdicchio, SHI International SVP and President of Public Sector Sales, in a video interview about the key components of a digital transformation strategy, the need for communication and clarity, and the role of diversity in innovation.

Aronson highlights the critical components of a digital transformation strategy and emphasizes the need for the entire company to know the organizational agenda. She adds that there has to be a translation between the agency’s plan and what it means for the technologists or other areas of the organization.

She mentions that the strategy must evolve continuously in coordination with the various work streams. Aronson stresses that leaders need to engage in conversations and get people to ask questions if they don’t understand anything.

Next, she discusses the convergence of IT and organizational digital transformation strategies. Aronson says the NSF shares its strategies across various CXO organizations for an overall technology perspective. Similarly, IT investment owners meet monthly and share their incremental progress. Aronson adds that it is through these conversations the plans remain in sync.

When asked about the most fulfilling parts of her career, she says it is most gratifying when people say that she inspired them. The other thing she mentions is her interest in the workforce.

Aronson reveals that she is working with the CIO Council to improve outreach to underrepresented communities. The plan is to collaborate with historically Black colleges and universities. She stresses the need for people who can enter the workforce and provide new spins on what is happening. Concluding, she says the diversity of thought is a catalyst to change.
