VIDEO | Abbott Neuromodulation CIO: You Don't Have To Wait To Acquire Knowledge

(US and Canada) Nick Sims, Abbott Neuromodulation Business Unit CIO, speaks with Michael C. Fillios, IT Ally Founder & CEO and CDO Magazine Editorial Board Member, in this video interview about developing talent, developing skills for students and young professionals, and mentorship.

Sims states that he prefers to develop talent internally unless there is a specific skill requirement. He points out that technical skills can be learned, so he focuses on problem-solving, passion, communication, and teamwork.

In his advice to students and young professionals, he highlights the following:

  1. You don't have to wait to acquire knowledge — level up in some way on your own.
  2. Have a desire and take baby steps toward what you want.
  3. Seek the help and guidance that you need.
  4. Be ready for change; don't stay stagnant.
  5. Read and seek information for yourself.

Next, Sims credits Phil McCoy, currently CIO at Optum, for mentoring him throughout his career. He describes McCoy as a leader who brought teams and people together, understood business broadly, and applied technology that solved business problems.

In conclusion, Sims shares a key lesson from executive coach Michael Goldsmith: imagine your future self and ask them questions; have conversations.
