The Excitement of Broadway Close to Home

The neon lights are bright on, well, the Aronoff Center, where Broadway comes to Cincinnati each year through the popular Broadway in Cincinnati series. The 2017-2018 season promises to delight audiences once again with an exciting mix of beloved classics, critically acclaimed Broadway hits and shows that will appeal to all ages.

"We’re very proud that the new season includes a great variety of shows, from family friendly titles like Aladdin and School of Rock, to classics like The King and I, to new shows straight from Broadway like Waitress," says Genevieve Holt, general manager of Broadway in Cincinnati.

Holt says audiences will also love Finding Neverland, a musical telling of the real-life events that inspired playwright J.M. Barrie to write "Peter Pan." Audience members of all ages will find something to love here. "There are sparkling elements that kids will enjoy," Holt says, "Finding Neverland taps into emotional themes that will tug the heartstrings of adult theatre-goers, as well."

Waitress was crafted by an all-female creative team, a first for Broadway. With music by popular singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, this groundbreaking show tells the story of a woman who seeks to better her life by entering a pie-baking contest. Holt says theatre-goers will connect with the musical’s celebration of friendship, love and motherhood.

The musical version of well-known classic holiday movie A Christmas Story brings new life to this nostalgic tale. The show features the work of songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who created much of the music for last year’s ultra-successful, Academy Award-winning "La La Land."

Another film-to-musical offering, School of Rock, is based on the movie-of-the-same-name starring Jack Black. The musical version, featuring songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber, tells the story of a frustrated rock musician turned substitute teacher who guides a group of wary fifth graders through the process of becoming a rock band. "This show is a pure delight for kids and adults alike," Holt says.

Audience favorites are also on tap in the coming season, including Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I, Chicago and Disney’s Aladdin. Special engagements of Wicked and The Book of Mormon book end the series.
