The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is developing resources and assets which are designed to help the agency adopt emerging technologies like artificial intelligence with greater caution and responsibility, according to DARPA Director Stefanie Tompkins.
“We are trying to flesh out the recipe environment to focus on something we call ELSI — so the ethical, legal and societal implications of our new technology,” Tompkins said at the NATO to the Future micro-summit hosted by Capital Factory, the Fedscoop reported.
At the event, Tompkins also highlighted the unpredictable and uncertain potential unintended consequences of advancing generative AI and adversarial capabilities. She revealed her team is currently leveraging ELSI to aid personnel in effectively prioritizing applications and evaluating unforeseen risks.
Earlier this year, it was reported that DARPA is collaborating with Slingshot Aerospace, Inc., to develop an advanced autonomous AI system designed to detect irregular spacecraft amidst vast satellite constellations.
