The U.S. Intelligence Community recently warned of the escalating threat stemming from rapid technological innovation and proliferation, especially in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). It emphasized the challenges governments encounter in adjusting and effectively responding to these dynamic changes.

“New technologies—particularly in the fields of AI and biotechnology are being developed and are proliferating at a rate that makes it challenging for companies and governments to shape norms regarding civil liberties, privacy, and ethics,” the latest U.S. Intelligence Community annual threat assessment report says.

“The convergence of these emerging technologies is likely to create breakthroughs, which could lead to the rapid development of asymmetric threats—such as advanced UAVs—to U.S. interests and probably will help shape U.S. economic prosperity,” the report adds.

The report further states that the evolution of AI brings unintended consequences such as widespread deepfakes, misinformation, and the potential emergence of AI-generated viruses or unconventional weapons.

Furthermore, it highlights the developments happening in China in terms of AI and how they pose a threat to the US.

Interestingly, last month, the U.S. cybersecurity watchdog Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), along with the National Security Agency (NSA), and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warned federal agencies about a possible cyber attack by Chinese state-sponsored cyber group Volt Typhoon.

The CISA warned that cyber actors sponsored by states are attempting to establish an early presence on IT networks, potentially for disruptive or destructive cyberattacks against critical infrastructure in the United States during significant crises or conflicts with the nation.
