The Department of Energy (DoE) recently unveiled an artificial intelligence roadmap centered around its Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence for Science, Security, and Technology (FASST) program.

FASST will revolutionize the management of extensive scientific data at DoE and facilitate the creation of the next generation of highly energy-efficient AI supercomputers.

It will also empower U.S. researchers, including the 40,000 scientists at national labs, to develop robust foundational AI models for achieving breakthroughs across diverse scientific and energy applications, DoE said in a press release.

It calls upon the U.S. government to cultivate capabilities in this pivotal technology.

Through FASST, the DOE and its 17 national laboratories aspire to forge the world's most advanced integrated scientific AI systems, focusing on science, energy, and national security, in partnership with academia and industry.

“Artificial intelligence is an innovative technology that can help unleash breakthroughs in energy technologies and enhance our national security. FASST builds on DOE's role as the nation's steward of advanced supercomputing and research infrastructure across our 17 national labs to provide a national capability in AI and enable technological breakthroughs for decades to come,”  U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm said.
