Indian ride-hailing app Ola’s founder Bhavish Aggarwal has introduced 'Krutrim AI,' an Indic language chatbot. The public beta rollout of Krutrim AI is available in over 10 Indian languages, including English, Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, and Gujarati.
Aggarwal emphasized that Krutrim AI marks a new era in India's AI computing stack and pledged ongoing innovation.
“More importantly, it is extremely essential to have an AI that is Indian at heart, stays true to our Indian cultural ethos, and solves real Indian problems,” said Aggarwal in his LinkedIn post.
“While there will be some hallucinations but much lower for Indian contexts than other global platforms. And we will be working overtime to find and fix them!” he added.
Krutrim AI positions itself with a 7/10 rating for political neutrality and estimates religious polarization in India at around 6-7 on a scale of 1-10. However, there are uncertainties about the underlying technology of Krutrim AI, such as the foundational model used and its adherence to open-source models launched by OpenAI and Meta.
The chatbot, however, tends to avoid responding to queries containing specific keywords related to figures like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
This comes at a time when Google's Gemini is facing backlash for generating controversial responses. Krutrim AI, despite promising lower hallucinations for Indian contexts compared to global platforms, faces potential challenges in navigating political and religious sensitivities.
The tool clarifies that its responses do not necessarily reflect the company's views and may generate incomplete, incorrect, or offensive output in its terms of use. These disclosures aim to address potential challenges in the reliability of information generated by the AI platform.
The launch of Krutrim AI comes after it achieved unicorn status and before its public release, securing significant funding from investors like Matrix Partners.
