Dublin City Council and OpenAI have joined forces to showcase the potential of AI in supporting Europe's tourism sector. The move aligns with the Irish capital city’s acknowledgment as the European Capital of Smart Tourism for 2024.
The primary goal of this partnership is to establish a benchmark for smart tourism innovation in Europe, emphasizing how AI can enhance the overall visitor experience.
Two key initiatives underpin this collaboration:
Dublin Itinerary Planner Proof of Concept
The Dublin Itinerary Planner Proof of Concept involves collaboration between Dublin City Council, OpenAI, and Data & Design, a local data consultancy. Leveraging the advanced capabilities of GPT-4, the Itinerary Planner tool aims to demonstrate how AI-generated travel recommendations can make Dublin's cultural and urban life more accessible to visitors.
It aims to showcase the power of generative AI in creating unique, personalized itineraries, deviating from conventional 'things to do' lists in cities.
Rudi O’ Reilly Meehan, Founder of Data & Design, underscored the transformative potential of OpenAI’s technologies and expressed enthusiasm for building a prototype that could scale across other cities and experiences.
“I am delighted to be working with Dublin City Council and OpenAI in building this prototype, and the approach we are taking has significant scope for scaling across other cities and experiences,” Meehan added.
Supporting tourism across Europe workshop
A hands-on workshop scheduled for September in Dublin will engage leaders from smart tourism destinations across the EU. This session will explore the various applications of AI in tourism, covering areas such as city promotion, destination branding, tourism engagement, and itinerary planning.
Mayor of Dublin Daithi De Roisti expressed excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing the potential of AI to transform tourism experiences.
“Through our EU Capital of Smart Tourism Designation we also look forward to welcoming city destination leaders to Dublin in September for a unique AI and tourism mentoring workshop to support their innovation programmes” Roisti added.
OpenAI is excited to collaborate with the City of Dublin to support the future of tourism in Europe. Our advanced AI technologies, including GPT-4, have the potential to revolutionize how people explore and experience destinations. We look forward to working together to create innovative solutions that will benefit visitors and cities alike," says OpenAI's VP of Global Affairs, Anna Makanju.
