Employees of the U.S. Department of Labor now have access to two advanced OpenAI models, GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini, through a collaboration with Microsoft Azure, making it the latest federal agency to embrace generative AI in its operations, according to Fedscoop.
Employees can use the AI models for a range of productivity-enhancing tasks, including translating languages, analyzing pros and cons, drafting memos, and conducting large document analyses and comparisons — all via a custom-built interface.
To ensure responsible use, the department has issued guidance outlining appropriate applications of GenAI. Employees are reminded that they play a “crucial” role in using the tools ethically and effectively.
Users receive a warning before initiating any AI-assisted task and are instructed to review the generated content carefully for accuracy.
Last year, the department published best practices for artificial intelligence aimed at developers and employers, designed to help organizations harness the benefits offered by AI while safeguarding workers from discrimination and job displacement.
It further said that it is working towards safeguarding workers from the potential risks of AI while also acknowledging the significant opportunities it presents.
The department also unveiled an extensive framework to offer guidance for deploying AI technologies to enhance job quality and safeguard workers’ rights.
